The Charlotte County Region

Charlotte County is located in Southwest Florida and is bordered by Sarasota, Desoto, Highlands, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties.  Charlotte County was established in 1921 and named for the Bay of Charlotte Harbor.  The City of Punta Gorda serves as the county seat.  In 2004, the Charlotte County region sustained extensive damage when Hurricane Charley, a category four hurricane, came ashore near Port Charlotte. Since this time the area has undergone an extensive restoration process, rebuilding homes, businesses, historic structures and other properties ravaged by the hurricane.

The Charlotte County region offers miles of sandy beaches, beautiful parks and reserves, and numerous golf courses and recreational facilities.  The area is a popular destination for vacationers and senior citizens looking to retire to a warm and sunny climate.  MONEY magazine has named Port Charlotte as the “Best Place to Retire” in the United States and U.S. News & World Report designated Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands as one of “America’s Best Healthy Places to Retire.”

According to U.S. Census Bureau 2013 population estimates, 164,736 people live in Charlotte County and 37% of the county’s population is 65 years or over.  Construction, professional and business services, trade, transportation and utilities, education and health services and leisure and hospitality are some of the major industries supporting the county’s economy.
